Heidy J. Lanzl
Biography:
As an elementary school student, I spent hours after school drawing with my best friend. Our studio was a small back porch off her mother's kitchen with a card table, two old wooden chairs and a dim bedroom lamp hanging over our heads. We copied favorite cartoon characters and I envied my friend's ability to focus and perfectly draw the characters as if she traced them. That perfection became my first measurement by which a "good artist" was defined and my early paintings were reflective of that focused, ridged style. Instinctively, I knew there were gaps in my work as my compositions didn't capture the subject's spirit as Robert Bateman, Terry Isaac and Carl Brender did. However, as a single parent with a demanding full time corporate management career, I had little time to figure out what was wrong. Years later, I sought out and tutored with wonderful professional artists who mentored me beyond my own boundaries toward new artistic freedom. With that freedom, using the beauty of wildlife and the flexibility of acrylic paint on masonite, I found a new path toward clear personal goals.
I specifically chose wildlife as my composition subjects as I am able to see my own personal feelings and convictions in the lives and expressions of many animals. Being the mother of a daughter with Downs Syndrome, I can identify with wildlife's innocence and with the instincts and inner strength required to survive in a complex world. Using clean colors and crisp, delicate lines, I let the eyes and honest body language send the subject's individual message for hope for their future and ours. Most important to me, I want my own firm belief in dignity, positive outlook on life and great appreciation for family to look back at me with each painting.
My ambitions include teaming with a publisher or gallery who will promote my individual work as well as joining with others to support community conservation programs. I plan on continuing my own artistic education to enhance my techniques and to explore other various mediums.
I make my home in Plainville, Connecticut with my husband, Jim and daughter.
